Don't miss out on our next monthly meeting, where the incredible artist Yves Mozelsio will be giving an amazing presentation!

Born in Brussels, Belgium, Yves Mozelsio immigrated to the United States when he was five years old. He is a self-taught artist who specializes in oil painting and photography. Earlier in his career, he worked as a graphic artist, illustrator and art director for a publishing company. In 1990, he decided to pursue a career in photography. After 25 years as a photographer, Yves is now semi-retired, allowing him to return his focus on nurturing his true passions for painting.

The Dream
The Dream

Artist Statement:

Since childhood, I’ve had an interest in the visual arts and art history. First studying painting at the age of 13, now many years later I continue to be inspired, learn and evolve in technique and style. Most of my artwork is figurative, but throughout the years I’ve also experimented in abstract, sculpture and multimedia art. Even though I’ve been influenced by other artists, I have developed a style of painting which I can call my own.

Artist Bio:

My preferred painting medium is oils. I typically paint in neutral earth tones. Since oil paints tend to dry slowly, it allows me to take the time needed throughout the creative process, making changes as needed along the way.

My present body of work tends to focus on themes related to Eastern European life prior to the 20th century. As reference, I often rely on my own family photographs, along with found historical photos. Having a sense of where my own family roots originated and their experiences, I hope to have a better understanding of the present world that we live in.

I also continue to have a passion for portrait and landscape photography. During the years 1992-1996, I produced a photographic documentary project entitled: The Fruits Of Our Labor, which later traveled as an exhibit from coast to coast in the United States, was featured on NPR and now resides in the permanent collection of The Magnes Museum in Berkeley, CA. The documentary consists of 54 portraits, along with personal statements from each individual. My prior exhibitions include: The Magnes Museum, Berkeley, CA; Spertus Museum, Chicago, IL; Yeshiva Museum, NY; Harold Washington Library, Chicago IL; Wright Museum of Art, Beloit, WI; and Osher Marin JCC, San Rafael CA.

I’ve had images of my work published in various publications. Most notably, Martin Gilbert’s book “Jews in the Twentieth Century”.
