Next General Membership Meeting

Friday, August 1st, 2008 at 7:00 PM

NOTE THE DATE & LOCATION
This month we return back to our schedule of holding our general meeting on the first Friday of the month.  Join us at the Pinole United Methodist Church (at 2000 San Pablo Avenue,  right past the bus stop mural) at 7:00 PM.

This month we will continue our hands-on project with gourds, begun last month.   Feel free to bring your own paints and brushes if you want to do something on your own. We will bring more gourds, sharpies and ink dyes to continue your projects, or start a new one! Everyone had a great time last meeting.

Next month, at our general meeting September 5th, we will welcome the return of Tesia Blackburn, the Golden Paints representative.  It has been a couple of years since she last visited us so she will be showing us the latest and greatest in the world of acrylic paints.

Letter From The President

The new Pinole Art Center and Pinole Artisans FoundationDear Artisans,
I've been down in San Luis Obispo County for the last six days refreshing my skills at plein aire painting.  It was a wonderful experience, and reminded me why I fell in love with this type of painting many years ago.  Despite the challenges of weather, insects, curious onlookers, hauling, and loading and setting up equipment; to look, see and choose what to put on your canvas is a fantastic rush.  My plan is to paint outdoors on Sundays and Mondays as much as possible.  If you would like to join me, just give me a call and we’ll arrange a place to meet.  I'm not really qualified to teach but I will be glad to share any and all that I learned.

"Hot Summer Days", our next Gallery show will open on Friday August 1, with the Grand Opening Event on Saturday August 2 from 1:00 to 4:30 PM.  Come and bring your friends!

The Pinole Artisans Meeting will be Friday August 1 at the Pinole United Methodist Church at 7:00 PM.  We will have another opportunity to work on Gourds!  Bring yours back if you have more to do or begin a new one.  We are anticipating another fun evening.

See you there!
Joan Landis

Pinole Artisan Foudation Events & Information

Artisans !     As we pass the middle of Summer by, we bring our current Gallery Show, “A Touch of Color,” to a close this week.  Soon, we will be experiencing the peak of our Summer heat and welcoming the aptly named Gallery Show “Hot Summer Days.”

This week will be a busy one, with the new show in-take on Tuesday, July 29th and installation Thursday, July 31st.  Friday we get together to finish up our gourds project at the general meeting.  Saturday, August 2, we would love for all of you to invite your friends and family and join us at the Art Center for the Grand Opening of the “Hot Summer Days” Gallery Show from 1:00-4:30PM at The Pinole Art Center.  Don’t forget to encourage visitors to the Gallery during the week to return for a whole new show this Saturday!

Thursday evening will also be the monthly Board of Directors of the Pinole Artisans Foundation meeting.  Board meetings are open for anyone to attend and they regularly occur the Thursday right before our general meeting, 7:00PM in the classroom at the art center.  While you are welcome to be present, if you want to address a certain issue, you need to contact Joan to be put on the Agenda for the evening.

Since we are likely to see one another on so many occasions this week, it would be a great opportunity to snap some photos of all the activity.  In fact, PICTURES WANTED: Vickie is putting together a  presentation for the City Council and would like to star YOU!  Are you teaching a class?  Participating at the Farmers’ Market?  Working at the Gallery?  Anything that has something to do with the Pinole Artisans is good material.  Please send pictures to Vickie (jpeg format) via e-mail at Vic3@aol..com, or call Vickie to come and take a picture.  (510) 758-3558.

Heads-Up:  I am in the process of working on an updated membership directory this month so keep an eye on the mailboxes.

Secretary,
Amanda Bruun

Artisans Bulletin Board

Artisans !The Library Show: Start now thinking of the theme: “ Every Day Matters.” The current show, “California Dreamin’,” will be in place until September 17. Please sign up to participate in the September show, which will run until early December. Also, we are looking for a solo musician who is willing to provide music for our reception. Do you play the guitar, keyboard, or some other instrument? We would love to have you share your gift of music with those who come to the reception September 24 at 7:00 PM. There may be a few dollars available for 45 minutes of playing. Please call Vickie Resso at 758-3558.

Archie Held Water Sculpture Project Update: This notice is for all Pinole Artisans who worked on the Pinole Shores Public Art Project with Archie Held and Chandra Cerrito.  Archie has notified us that there is still some work to be done on the base sculpture in the way of refining cut-out shapes and finishing the background.  If you would like to participate in doing some hands-on kind of work at Archie's Studio, please contact Joan at 758-2935 to find out more.

Farmers’ Market: The farmer’s market has been averaging about 5 Artisans participating each weekend and has been going well.  More than anything, the people love the presence of art and the artists love the community at the market.  If you participate in the Farmers’ Market or would like to do so in the future, we have new forms with Farmers’ Market Policies for you to sign.   If you are interested, please contact Joan for more information.

Airbrush Classes with Joe Shaw:

Joe Shaw is offering Introductory airbrush classes by appointment at his home studio.  Classes are small so they are tailored to your scheduling needs and particular interests.  Joe  brings together information about tools and techniques you will need to get started and has opportunities for hands-on work.  If you are interested, contact Joe at (510) 724-7272 or Joe@JShawPaints.com

Painting Journey—A Meditative Art Process Class with Patrice Stone:  You do not have to go way outside yourself to come into real conversation with your soul and with the mysteries of the spiritual world.  Painting as a process provides an opportunity for self-discovery and inner exploration in a creative endeavor without focusing on the end result.  The process allows one to focus on feelings and a sense of curiosity rather than techniques, talent or skill.  There is a freedom in not having to make things in perfect proportions.

If you are feeling blocked, overwhelmed or stressed, come paint.  You will learn how to keep a painting going, with freedom from judgment.  We will discuss the process, not the paintings, and how to stay inspired to paint outside of the classroom.  Classes are held at Patrice’s Studio in San Pablo.  Contact Patrice at (510) 235-2328 or by e-mail at Patrice@berkeley.edu for more information.

Pinole Artisans at the Hercules Public Library: Andrew Walters would love to see some of our art up in the recently complete Hercules Library. Individual artists are welcome to submit an application to show a few pieces on their own. If you are interested, stop by the library or e-mail Andrew Walters at candrewwalters@sbcglobal.net.

Kaiser Public Art Project: If you are interested in selling artwork to Kaiser for the inside of the new medical office building on Pinole Valley Road, and have not yet given your name to Joan, you should do so soon.  Joan is keeping a list of those interested in this opportunity and will be forwarding the names on to the person in charge of acquiring art for the new building.

Logo Wear: You can order items to be embroidered or you can take her your personal items to have them embroidered with the Pinole Artisans logo.

If you are interested, contact Vickie Resso (510) 758-3558, for more information and pricing details.

Quilt project update

Conservatory for the Arts Quilt Project Update– Artwork Needed: This is an update about the collaborative quilt project to help our sister organization for the performing arts with their fundraiser auction in September.

The quilt will be created by using artwork, created by members of the Pinole Artisans, which will be printed on fabric with an inkjet printer.  While Janie has put in a lot of time to format the project, she needs more artwork submissions.  The initial deadline of July 31st has been pushed back so we can have more participation.  If you would like to participate but have not yet submitted your artwork, please see Janie at the meeting Friday or contact her.  The following is from Janie:

For all Pinole Artisans members who wish to participate in the Conservatory for the Arts Collaborative Art (Quilt) Project, the following are the specifications for submitting your artwork.

The quilt will be a small queen size (62”x72”) and will consist of 30 pieces of art (one of the squares will be an embroidered Pinole Artisans logo, so 29 of your artwork).  We will need 15 landscape oriented pieces and 14 portrait oriented pieces.  Each piece will be inkjet printed on an 8.5”x11” piece of fabric.  There will be a half-inch wide white border on each piece so the area for your art will be 7.5”x10”.

You will need to either: (1) Submit a digital image of your art to me (Janie Chambers) most likely on a CD to have the best resolution since the file size needed for a good print is too large to e-mail; (2) Have me scan your artwork (my scanner only accepts up to legal size paper); or (3) Have Vickie Resso (who graciously volunteered) or me photography your work.

There is no requirement of a style or color scheme for your work because we don’t want to exclude anyone’s work.

If you need to have it scanned or photographed, please let me know so we can see what can be arranged.

If we receive more pieces than required for the quilt, the quilt committee will select the pieces that will be the most cohesive and aesthetically pleasing for the look of the final quilt.

I want to thank Bonnie Napier for volunteering to design, and help construct the quilt.  I will bring the rough draft of the design to the next meeting on July 11th so you will have a better idea of how it will look.

If you have JoAnn’s Fabric coupons available and would like to donate them for purchasing quilt supplies, please bring them to the meeting.

I appreciate your help and hope you will participate!!
